Hey everyone, welcome to Back to Fitness! I’m Dr. Craig Schulman, and today we’re diving into something that affects every movement you make—your spinal health. Whether you’re lifting weights, running, or just staying active, your spine is the foundation of your movement and strength.

But here’s the thing—many people don’t pay attention to their spine until they’re in pain. And by that point, the problem has already built up over time. So today, we’re talking about why your spine matters for fitness, what happens when it’s not working right, and what you can do to keep it healthy.


Think of your spine like the foundation of a building. If that foundation is off, everything above it starts to shift, crack, and wear down. The same goes for your body! When your spine is out of alignment, it puts strain on your muscles, joints, and nervous system. That can lead to:

  • Decreased flexibility and mobility
  • Poor posture that throws off your movement
  • A higher risk of injuries, like strains, sprains, and muscle imbalances

So what can you do? Let’s talk about three key habits that will keep your spine healthy and help you move at your best:

1️⃣ Move More, Sit Less.
We’re in a world where sitting dominates—whether it’s at work, on the couch, or in the car. But prolonged sitting puts pressure on your lower back and weakens the muscles that support your spine. Try setting a reminder to stand up, stretch, or walk every 30 minutes.

2️⃣ Strengthen Your Core.
Your core is your spine’s best support system. If it’s weak, your back takes the hit. Simple exercises like planks, bird-dogs, and glute bridges can do wonders to stabilize your spine and improve your posture.

3️⃣ Get Regular Chiropractic Adjustments.
A chiropractor ensures your spine is aligned and moving correctly, which can reduce stress on your muscles and joints. Many athletes and fitness enthusiasts get regular adjustments to improve performance and prevent injuries!
