Hey there, and welcome back to the podcast—this is your quick, wellness-packed episode from your local experts at Chiropractic Fitness in Charlotte.
Alright, it’s summer. The days are longer, the sun’s hotter, and we’re all spending more time outdoors. Whether you’re hitting the pool, going for hikes, or just mowing the lawn—there’s one key thing many people forget when it comes to their health this time of year: hydration and inflammation—and how both affect your spine.
Now, we all know we should drink more water when it’s hot out, right? But here’s what most people don’t realize: dehydration directly impacts your spinal discs. Those soft, gel-like cushions between your vertebrae? They’re made up of mostly water. So when you’re dehydrated, your spine doesn’t function as well. You may feel stiffer, more achy, or even notice an increase in back or neck pain—especially if you’re already prone to it.
Now let’s add heat into the mix. In hot weather, your body naturally becomes more inflamed. That’s a normal response—but if you’re already dealing with joint or spinal issues, it can make symptoms worse. The heat itself doesn’t cause injury, but it amplifies underlying inflammation, which is why some patients report feeling more sore or stiff in the summer—even if they’re not overdoing it.
Then, let’s talk footwear for a second—yep, flip-flops. They’re easy and breezy, but they offer little to no arch support. Walking long distances in them can throw off your entire alignment, especially if you’re already dealing with low back or hip issues. If you’re going to be out and about, go for sandals with good arch support and cushioning. Your spine will thank you.
So, what can you do to stay ahead of these summertime challenges?
Here are a few quick tips:
And of course—stay proactive with your chiropractic care. Summer is not a time to skip appointments. If anything, it’s a season where your spine might need a little extra attention to stay aligned, hydrated, and inflammation-free.
