Hey there, I’m Doctor Craig Schulman from Chiropractic Fitness here in Charlotte, and today I want to talk about something that might surprise you. We’re going to explore the connection between your spine and your digestion. Now, I know what you’re thinking — what does my back have to do with my gut, right? Well, stick with me, because this is actually fascinating stuff.

Here’s what happens. Your nervous system controls everything in your body — and I mean everything. Your brain sends signals down your spinal cord, and those signals travel out through the nerves between your vertebrae to reach every organ, every muscle, every system. That includes your digestive system. Your stomach, your intestines, your liver — they’re all getting instructions from nerves that exit your spine. So when there’s interference in the spine, when those vertebrae aren’t moving right or they’re out of alignment, it can actually affect how well those nerves communicate with your digestive organs.

Let me give you an example. The mid-back region — we call it the thoracic spine — that’s where nerves branch off to your stomach and upper digestive tract. If you’ve got restrictions in that area, or if those joints aren’t functioning properly, it can impact digestive function. People often don’t make that connection. They’re dealing with occasional bloating or discomfort, and they never think about their spine.

Now, I’m not saying chiropractic care cures digestive diseases — let’s be really clear about that. But what I see regularly in practice is people getting adjusted for back pain or neck pain, and they tell me, hey, my digestion seems better. Or they’re not as bloated. It’s not magic — it’s just restoring better nerve function and helping the body work the way it’s designed to.

Here’s another piece of the puzzle. Stress. We all know stress messes with digestion, right? When you’re stressed, your shoulders tighten up, your neck gets stiff, your whole body tenses. That tension affects spinal alignment and nerve flow. Plus, when your body’s in pain, that’s a stress all by itself. So by addressing spinal dysfunction and getting your body moving better, we can help reduce that physical stress load.

So what can you do about this? First, pay attention to your posture. If you’re hunched over a computer all day, that’s putting pressure on your mid-back — right where those digestive nerves come out. Take breaks, stretch, move around. Second, stay hydrated and eat regular meals. Your body needs fuel to heal and function properly. And third, consider getting your spine evaluated. Even if your digestion seems fine, it’s smart to make sure your nervous system is communicating clearly with all your organs.

If you’re dealing with ongoing digestive issues, definitely see your primary doctor first to rule out anything serious. But if they’ve cleared you and you’re still struggling, or if you just want to optimize how your body functions, that’s where we come in. A chiropractic evaluation can identify areas of spinal dysfunction that might be contributing to the problem.
